Non-Surgical Relief for Hip Pain

By: California Center of Longevity & Functional Medicine on August 1, 2019

Benefits of Regenerative Stem Cell Therapies.

Hip pain can cause major inconveniences, along with a reduced quality of life. After all, proper functioning of the hip is vital to mobility. Hip pain caused by hip arthritis and hip labral tears affect thousands of Los Angelenos each year, and far too many suffer a reduced quality of life as the result of these injuries and conditions. Fortunately, the emergence of regenerative therapies such as Stem Cell Therapy injections and PRP injections offer a great deal of promise for individuals suffering from hip pain. Here's how Stem Cell injections and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections work to alleviate hip pain, without the need for surgery.

Non-Surgical Treatment for Hip Arthritis and Hip Labrum Tears

Hip arthritis doesn't develop out of the blue. It is the result of the degeneration of cartilage in the hip. Hip arthritis typically originates from an injury or from ligament weakness. The ligaments are responsible for holding the bones together, while the cartilage ensures that the bones of the hip are able to move freely and smoothly in the joint when you walk or engage in any other activity. When the cartilage becomes damaged, the hip bones are no longer able to move freely. Instead, the necessary space within the joint narrows, and bone spurs often develop. This leads to pain, and decreased function of the hip.

An injury to the labrum in the hip is similar in some regards, in that the labrum is a ring of cartilage, which is necessary for the smooth and pain free movement of the hip joint. The job of the labrum is to ensure movement between the pelvis and the legs, and to act as a cushion (similar to a shock absorber) for the hip and thigh bones. Damage to this ring of cartilage will result in pain and hip instability.

Non-surgical treatments for hip arthritis and labrum tears include medications such as Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs known as NSAIDs, and/or cortisone injections. While both options may provide the sufferer with some degree of relief, they are a temporary solution to a permanent problem. To put it another way, they treat the symptoms, but not the cause of the pain. They also may come with undesirable side effects. For example, NSAIDS may weaken the integrity of tissues such as tendons and ligaments, thereby preventing them from healing. Cortisone may also weaken collagen and soft tissue. For these reasons, these methods aren't ideal for treating hip arthritis, or labrum tears in the hip.

Regenerative Therapies for Hip Arthritis

Fortunately, there are newer treatments for hip arthritis which are non-surgical, and don't carry the risks of undesirable side effects. These regenerative treatments include autologous Stem Cell Therapy and PRP injections. Available at the California Center for Longevity and Functional Medicine by Dr. Allan Kurtz— who is fellowship trained in Stem Cell Therapies—stem cell and PRP injections use your body's own cells and plasma to alleviate pain by stimulating regeneration in and around the hip. By stopping the progression of degeneration, Stem Cell injections and PRP injections instead stimulate the production of your body's natural inflammatory-repairing mechanisms, all the while strengthening cartilage, and developing new healthy cells which can replace damaged and diseased cells. For many men and women in Los Angeles with hip pain, choosing this regenerative treatment results in reduced pain, without the risks of surgery and/or medication.

Dr. Allan Kurtz provides ultra-sound guided PRP injections and Stem Cell injections to individuals in the San Fernando Valley and Malibu who would like to treat the cause of the pain, rather than just the symptoms. Using your body's own stem cells or plasma, the risk of side effects from Stem Cell Therapy is minimal, as the treatments use injections that are natural to your body to regrow healthy cells, without damaging the surrounding tissue.

If you've been suffering from arthritis in your hip, knee, or shoulder, you may be an excellent candidate for non-surgical regenerative treatments. Stem Cell injections and PRP injections are available during a regular office visit.
